âGood morning, sleepy heads,â Aiden greeted the love of his life and his son.
Kaiâs brow rose before she walked over to grace him with a kiss to the cheek.
âWhen did you get back?â
âI never left,â Aiden whispered.
âWhere did you get the clean clothes?â
He blushed.
âTheyâre Koaâs.â
After his shower, he had gone rummaging through Koaâs closet and found a pair of dark gray sweatpants and matching t-shirt. They were a little baggy and long, but they were clean and comfortable.
This time both brows hitched upward.
âHuh,â she stated flatly.
Without another word, she went to grab a glass, mug, and a plastic kiddy cup from the cupboard.
âWant some coffee?â Kai asked.
âYes, please.â
âAloha, Mr. Kaplan!â
A.J. ran over to him and hugged his waist. Without pause, he gave him a brief hug and kissed the top of his sleep-tousled locks.
âGood morning, buddy,â Aiden answered, unaware of the sappy grin covering his face at the sight of his son.
âWhat are you cooking?â A.J. questioned going to sit at the table with his grandfather.
âScrambled eggs, turkey sausages and whole wheat toast,â Aiden informed happily.
âMmm,â A.J. licked his lips as he sat patiently waiting at the kitchen table.
âThat does sound good,â Mr. Kapahu said patting his belly hungrily. âIâm starving.â
Kai agreed as she set the mug of coffee near the stove where he stood.
âI heard strenuous activity does that to you,â Aiden smirked, eyes glowing mischievously.
Before he could move away, Kai pinched him playfully on the ass.
âOkay, you two,â Mr. Kapahu admonished good-naturedly looking up from his paper. âThere is a child present.â
A.J. giggled bringing him back from his lustful thoughts.
âFoodâs ready,â Aiden announced as he brought the filled dishes of hot food to the table. Everyone helped themselves, except A.J., who was served by him.
âHmm,â Kai hummed appreciatively. âItâs delicious.â Her father shook his head in agreement. âDid Bobby Flay teach you how to make this?â Kai tapped her lower lip playfully. âOr was it, Anne Burrell?â
Aidenâs head bowed in mock shame.
âIâm never gonna live that down, am I?â
âNope,â she rebuked with a smug smile.
A.J. sat staring at him, a brow arched in thought.
âWhatâs the matter, buddy?â Aiden studied his little boy.
âMr. Kaplan?â
âYes, A.J.?â
His son smiled at him, blue eyes as clear as the cloudless Hawaiian sky outside the kitchen window.
âWhen can I start calling you daddy?â
Stunned by the comment, Kai choked on her orange juice, sputtering and coughing into her napkin. Mr. Kapahu gently patted his obviously shocked daughter on the back until she was able to breathe normally again.
âA.J.,â she responded as calmly as she could. âWho told you Mr. Kaplan is your father?â
Kai glanced at her father with a dagger-like stare, nostrils flaring in anger.
âNo way,â Joseph claimed, sounding as surprised as she did; his Hawaiian lilt strengthened under his livid daughterâs scrutiny. âI didnât say nothâin.â
She looked back at A.J.
âWho told you?â she asked again, her usually dormant Hawaiian accent stronger because of her stress.
âNobody,â the little boy shrugged.
âAre you telling me the truth?â she grilled. âNennie didnât tell you?â
âMommy,â he sighed looking at her directlyâblue eyes to amber eyes.
